IT 3: Welcome to Derry

Decades after the horrifying events that haunted the small town of Derry, Maine, the shadows begin to move again. IT 3: Welcome to Derry opens with a chilling scene: a group of teenagers exploring the ruins of the old Neibolt House on Halloween night. What begins as a harmless dare quickly turns into terror when one of them disappears, leaving behind only a red balloon floating in the dark. The legend of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, believed to have been destroyed by the Losers’ Club years ago, returns to infect the town’s heart once more.

The story follows Sarah Denbrough, the niece of Bill Denbrough, who has just moved to Derry with her family. She begins to experience strange visions—children whispering from storm drains, laughter echoing in empty hallways, and flashes of a grinning clown in her dreams. As she investigates, she uncovers her uncle’s old journals describing the battle against IT and the terrifying truth that the creature was never truly gone, only dormant. Something—or someone—has awakened it again.

Meanwhile, Derry itself feels alive, pulsing with a dark energy. People vanish without explanation, and the town’s residents turn a blind eye, as if trapped in a curse of denial. A group of outcast teenagers, led by Sarah, bands together after one of their friends disappears. They call themselves the New Losers’ Club, determined to face the evil haunting their town. As they dig deeper, they discover that Pennywise is only a fragment of something much older—a cosmic force of fear that feeds on pain and despair.

IT Chapter 3 Welcome to Derry Movie Facts (2025) | Jessica Chastain | Bill Skarsgård | HBO Max

The film explores the origins of IT, revealing glimpses of Derry’s bloody history through haunting flashbacks. It shows how the creature manipulated generations, disguising its influence through accidents, fires, and tragedies. The deeper Sarah and her friends go, the more they realize that defeating IT means confronting not just their fears but the town’s buried sins. Each member of the group faces personal nightmares—manifestations of guilt, trauma, and doubt—crafted by Pennywise to break their unity.

In the explosive climax, the New Losers return to the sewers beneath Derry, retracing the steps of their predecessors. There, Pennywise reappears in a new, even more monstrous form, blending its clownish façade with ancient, otherworldly horror. Through courage and sacrifice, Sarah uses her uncle’s words and the power of collective belief to finally end the cycle. The creature collapses into dust, its laughter fading into silence.

As dawn rises over Derry, the surviving friends emerge from the tunnels, changed forever. The town begins to heal, but as the camera pans down to the sewers one last time, a single red balloon drifts upward and bursts—leaving a faint echo of laughter behind. IT 3: Welcome to Derry closes with a haunting question: can evil ever truly die, or does it simply wait for fear to return?
